About Alliance Membership

The Global Climate and Health Alliance (henceforth referred to as ‘the Alliance’) works to tackle human-induced climate change and, through this, to protect and promote public health.  Members of the Alliance are health and development-focused organisations from around the world united by a shared vision of an equitable, sustainable future, where the health impacts of climate change are minimized and the health co-benefits of climate mitigation are maximized.

The Alliance’s work is carried out by a secretariat together with the participation and support of member organisations, according to their capacity.  Not-for-profit health, healthcare and development organisations and health professional organisations make up most of the Alliance’s membership base, and applications from such organisations will generally be non-contentious.  In the case that the secretariat believes that an application requires the board’s approval (e.g. an organisation whose work is not directly related to health or development, or a for-profit company), this will be discussed at the next quarterly meeting before a decision is made.

In applying to join the Alliance, organisations declare their support the principles underpinning the work of the Alliance, articulated in the Alliance’s Doha Declaration on Climate, Health and Well-Being, drafted in 2012.

In brief, these principles establish that:

  1. Responding to climate change is an urgent priority for the protection of public health.  Climate change poses a major threat to human health and wellbeing: the impacts are being experienced in every country today, and will be felt more severely tomorrow without urgent emissions reductions.
  2. Sustainability is key to the promotion of public health. Many actions to address climate change offer substantial benefits for health, turning this threat into an unparalleled opportunity.  Smart policy responses can help to realise these and create major cost savings for society.
  3. Fair and ambitious climate change policy is urgently needed to improve the health and wellbeing of people around the world.  Climate change, sustainable development and equity are closely linked, and it is essential that these challenges are tackled in a joined-up way. Partnerships within and between sectors can help to achieve this goal.

As members of the Alliance, organisations are:

  • Required to nominate a liaison to serve as point person for communications with the Alliance secretariat.
  • Required to send their organisation’s logo by email for inclusion on the Alliance website’s list of members and on published materials which list the organisational members of the Alliance.
  • Able to use the Global Climate and Health Alliance’s logo on their website to indicate membership in the Alliance, and on published materials that are in line with the Alliance’s principles as stated in the Doha declaration (logo alongside language as follows, “[organisation] is a member of the Global Climate and Health Alliance”); please contact us if uncertain.
  • Encouraged to propose ideas to the secretariat such as for events, campaigns or new resources; to make use of resources produced by the Alliance; to share Alliance resources with their members; and to join activities organized by the Alliance.

The Alliance represents a broad coalition of organisations. Its is governed by a Board of Directors (currently, the Founding Board), which is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the Alliance, determining its governance, and approving its annual programme of work, in consultation with other member organisations. Please feel free to contact [email protected] with any questions you may have.
